OGame alternatives in 2026: an honest comparison

Looking for a game like OGame? What OGame still does best, where AstroExpanse takes the formula next, and four other space strategy games worth your time.

Disclosure: AstroExpanse is our game. We list it first because this page is ours, and we have tried to be fair to everything else on it. Each feature below carries its real status: Live in alpha, In development or Planned.

The short answer

If you loved OGame’s loop — mines ticking, the shipyard queue, the fleet you timed to land at 03:12 — and you want it on a modern engine without a premium currency, try AstroExpanse. If you want something different from OGame rather than a better version of it, skip to the other alternatives.

What OGame still does best

OGame has been running since 2002, and that longevity is its strength:

  • Scale and community. Many servers, many languages, alliances with decades of history. No new game can offer that on day one — including ours.
  • A proven loop. Resources, buildings, research, ships, defence, raids. The formula works, which is why so many games have borrowed it.
  • Depth over the years. Classes, lifeforms and events have added layers on top of the original design.

If those are what keep you playing, OGame is still a good place to be.

Where AstroExpanse takes the formula

AstroExpanse is a ground-up rewrite of the classic browser space-strategy game. We kept the economy — costs, production and travel times follow the original formulas — and rebuilt everything around it, combat included.

OGame AstroExpanse Status
Updates Mostly page by page, reload to see changes Queues, fleets, reports and chat change on screen as they happen Live in alpha
Galaxy Paged system tables A 3D spiral galaxy you fly through, plus a classic system table Live in alpha
Your planet Building lists and images A 3D colony where buildings appear as you build them Live in alpha
Monetisation Dark Matter premium currency, officers Free; cosmetics and conveniences, never power, resources or speed Policy
Battles Six rounds with rapidfire, resolved instantly on arrival Live engagements over several minutes, shown in 3D: retreat or send reinforcements mid-fight; every fight seeded and recorded Live in alpha
Missions Attack, transport, deploy, espionage, colonise, harvest, expedition and more Attack, espionage, transport, deploy, colonise, harvest, reinforce Live in alpha
Moons and debris Yes Yes — moons, Lunar Base, Sensor Phalanx, harvestable debris Live in alpha
Battle simulator Official simulator, rolled out since 2024 Built in; shows the range of likely outcomes Live in alpha
Endgame Universes run on, then merge or close The Abyss: a staged finale where alliances race to build a Gate at the galaxy’s central black hole In development
Mobile Browser, plus official iOS and Android apps Browser today; native apps Planned

Two differences matter more than the rest.

Nothing is for sale that wins. The classic formula grew up alongside premium currencies that buy resources and time. We are not doing that. AstroExpanse will sell cosmetics and conveniences (a season pass, skins, tools that organise what you already know) and never resources, build time or combat power.

A universe ends. In the classic games a universe runs until it empties out. An AstroExpanse universe runs in seasons, and late in the season the Abyss at the centre of the galaxy wakes: anomalies surge, Gate schematics appear, and alliances race to build a Gate at the black hole. One alliance finishes it. Then a new universe opens, and everyone starts level.

What AstroExpanse cannot offer yet

Honesty cuts both ways:

  • No community yet. You would be arriving early, into a small test universe.
  • No native apps. It plays in a phone browser, but unlike OGame there is nothing in the app stores yet.
  • Fewer missions. No expeditions, and no lifeform-style expansion layer.
  • The finale is being built. The phase machinery is in; the Gate race itself is not playable yet.

Four other games worth a look

These are not OGame-likes in the strict sense, which is the point: if the classic loop has worn thin, one of these may suit you better.

Game Best for Platform
Astro Empires The classic browser formula, long-running Browser
Neptune’s Pride Short, tense matches with a small group over a couple of weeks Browser
Prosperous Universe Economy, production chains and trade over combat Browser/desktop
Hades’ Star Space strategy designed for phones Mobile, desktop

Choose what you actually want

  • The same game, played for years, with an established community: stay with OGame.
  • The same loop, rebuilt — live, fair, with battles you fight: play AstroExpanse, or watch a battle first, no signup.
  • Something shorter and sharper: Neptune’s Pride.
  • Spreadsheets over battleships: Prosperous Universe.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best OGame alternative in 2026?

It depends on what you want to keep. For the same build-queue-fleet loop with a modern, live interface and no pay-to-win, AstroExpanse. For short, finite matches with friends, Neptune's Pride. For economy over combat, Prosperous Universe. For mobile-first play, Hades' Star.

Is AstroExpanse an OGame clone?

No. Both belong to the persistent browser space-strategy tradition, and AstroExpanse keeps the classic economy on purpose. It is built from scratch on a new engine, with its own combat, its own art, and a finale that ends each universe.

Is OGame outdated?

It is old, not dead. OGame still runs many servers in many languages and keeps adding content. What has aged is the interface: page-by-page navigation, flat tables, and a premium currency that buys speed.

Is AstroExpanse pay-to-win?

No. It is free to play and will only ever sell cosmetics and conveniences. Resources, build time and combat power are not for sale.
